India Venster is one of Table Mountain’s greatest hikes, filled with fun and adventure. Well known for its technical rock scrambles, the route has exposure to heights, and a good head for heights is required. It offers sensational panoramic views over the city and Atlantic coastline, making it one of the most rewarding ways to experience Table Mountain and see Cape Town’s natural beauty.
Route Description
The route starts on the northern slopes, also known as the Front Table, just to the right of the Table Mountain cableway station. From here, the trail zig zags beneath the cableway as it ascends. We hike through India Ravine, passing unique fynbos and notable rock formations, with the first part of the route being the most physically demanding. The views soon open up over the Atlantic Ocean, the City of Cape Town, Devils Peak, Lions Head, Robben Island, Table Bay, and all the way to the west coast.
India Venster is a technical route and not your average hike. Along the way, there are scrambles up rock faces, either using the natural grooves in the rocks or the chains and staples installed to assist hikers. These sections are exciting and relatively straightforward for many hikers, though they can be fairly challenging for those without a head for heights. A good level of fitness is essential. Hikers who are uneasy with exposure and have a fear of heights should consult a guide or company beforehand.
Once we cross over to the western slopes, the route becomes less physically demanding, with some more level sections. The scenery shifts here too, opening up to a different outlook with its own variety of beautiful flora, along with views over the 12 Apostles and the Atlantic coast as we hike below massive sandstone cliffs to the summit. From the summit, a short walk brings you to the Upper Cable Car Station for the ride down.

Meeting and Parking
Meet at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway station on Tafelberg Road. Parking is available alongside the road.
India Venster Scrambles
- Difficulty on India Venster mostly comes down to the scrambling sections along the route.
- Scrambling refers to climbing up steep terrain using your hands and feet for support, more involved than regular hiking but without ropes or technical equipment.
- You do not scramble the entire way, but there are several sections where you will scramble over rock faces with real exposure to heights.
- Some sections use natural grooves in the rocks, while others are assisted by chains and staples installed for hikers.
- A good fitness level and some upper body strength is needed to pull yourself up in places.
- Difficulty is individual. Some hikers find the scrambling straightforward, others find it tricky.
- Hikers who are scared of heights or uneasy with exposure should consult a guide beforehand to determine if this route is suitable for them.

Getting the Cable Car Down
- Tickets can be bought with a credit card at the top after the hike.
- The cable car ride down takes 4 to 5 minutes.
- The cable car departs every 10 to 15 minutes.
- The cable car may not run due to adverse weather conditions. In this case, we hike back down, and an extra charge applies for the extended hike.
