Kariega Game Reserve is a malaria free safari destination located in the Eastern Cape and offers exceptional game viewing all year round. Kariega game reserve covers 5260 hectares of African wilderness and spans across five different eco-systems. Set between the Kariega and Bushman’s rivers, the diverse landscape and lush environment make the reserve a haven for varied flora and wildlife species.

Kariega Game Reserve houses five high standard safari lodges on the reserve. the three 4-star lodges offer guests a diverse selection of accommodation. Ukhosi Lodge is perched high up in the reserve and has 10 luxury suites with private plunge pools, and breath-taking views. River Lodge offers stand alone suites along the Riverbed and Kariega’s Main lodge is family friendly and welcomes children of all ages. Settlers Drift is the only 5-star lodge and it is located in a remote part of the Kariega Game Reserve. The homestaed is a 7-bedroom private safari lodge for families and friends and provides an experience with your own private chef and ranger as well as a bar, swimming pool, garden, boma and more.

Game drives at Kariega take place twice a day in the morning and afternoon and are taken in specialized 8-seater 4×4 safari vehicles. With the assistance of your expert ranger, you will enjoy close-up sightings of the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard) as well as hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, and a variety of other antelope. Kariega Game Resevre also offers river cruises, guided bush walks, fishing and canoeing excursions.

Game Drives

  • Game drives take place twice a day in the early mornings and afternoons for a duration of 3-4 hours.
  • Game drives are led by an experienced guide.
  • Night drives and guided bush walk are permitted.

Wildlife

  • Kariega is a Big-5 reserve and is home to the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
  • Other wildlife includes zebra, giraffe, hippo, a variety of antelope species, lynx, hyena, jackal, and more.
  • A large bird colony is particularly draw to the rivers.
  • Leopard sightings are rare in any Eastern Cape game reserve.

  • Flight time from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth: 1 hour 35 minutes
